Digital Perfections offers high resolution scanning of paintings, drawings and any other flat or low profile art objects that is needed to reproduce artwork in print at the same size as the original or larger.

Our normal scanning resolution is 360dpi which is sufficient to produce a high quality print for most paintings and drawings. For fine graphics, pieces with very fine details and for enlargements we offer even higher resolution scans up to 1200dpi.

There are no limits on the size of the original as long as you can deliver it to our studio. The largest painting we digitized so far for the life size reproduction was 84″ by 60″ @300dpi.

All scanned images are colour corrected against the original on a colour calibrated system under the controlled industry standard D50 lighting.

High resolution scans are completed in our studio and at this moment can’t be done on customer’s location. Our regular turnaround time is 2-3 business days.

We have extensive experience documenting large collections of artwork and take special care handling artwork during the process of digitization.

After the digitization is complete we deliver full resolution scans to your USB drive or over the Internet in any format of your preference and can offer our large format printing services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I photograph my painting myself?

Yes, you can. You will need to take several things into consideration.

Most modern affordable DSLRs now have 24mpx sensors. The image from such a camera filling full frame of the sensor will get you approx 20″x13″  print of great quality @300dpi or 25″x16.5″ of still good quality @240dpi. In prints of even larger sizes the fine details will get noticeably fuzzier.

You would need a set of high quality high CRI lights and make sure all parts of your painting are lit very evenly. Also, you would need to have a colour calibrated monitor and a colour managed workflow to ensure your colour corrections will look the same as on your printing company’s system. A professional grade software and skills will be required to do fine colour adjustments.

It is up to you to decide whether you have time, resources and desire to do the documentation on your own or hire a professional.

I paint in pastels. Will scanning cause a damage to the surface?

We use technique that completely eliminates the physical contact with the surface of artwork during the scanning process. Your piece will be returned to you in the same condition as it was dropped off.

Can you scan paintings with gloss varnish or resin coating?

Yes, we can scan highly reflective surfaces but it takes more time, so we add additional 25% to the scanning cost for this type of artwork.

Generally, if you plan getting your artwork scanned it is better to bring it for scanning before it is varnished or coated with resin. This will produce a higher quality scan and will cost you less. We will adjust the image to reflect the increased contrast and saturation of a varnished piece.

What image formats do you deliver after the scanning?

Usually, we deliver 8bit TIFF files in a colour space that can preserve colours of the original, mostly in AdobeRGB, but for very saturated colours it could be ProPhotoRGB. Most printing companies prefer to deal with TIFF files. We also provide JPG copies in high, medium and low resolution versions for other uses like websites, social media, portfolios and submissions to shows.

No problem to deliver image files in any other format of your preference.
